We have great news to report on the progress of the 286-acre Painted Hills purchase! On Monday evening, the Tucson City Council unanimously approved a bond ordinance amendment to make the Painted Hills property once again eligible for purchase using 2004 voter approved bond funds. And then on Tuesday, the Pima County Board of Supervisors approved the bond ordinance amendment to make the purchase possible.
Located west of Tucson between Speedway and Anklam, Painted Hills is an area with diverse Sonoran Desert wildlife, mature dense stands of saguaros, and wildlife movement corridors. For years, the Coalition has been working with community groups, citizens, the property owner, and local governments to make the conservation of this area a reality. A recent gift to the county of another 100 acres directly to the south will provide Painted Hills, when purchased, connectivity to Tucson Mountain Park. With these three most recent actions, Painted Hills is closer than ever to being permanently protected and part of Tucson Mountain Park!
Thank you for your ongoing support, strong voices, and time! This victory would not have been possible without strong and consistent community activism. We know this area will be a local treasure for years to come.
